![]() ![]() When it's open (as pictured below), another great design detail becomes very visible: the compartment's cover is curved like the rest of the remote.Īlso worth noting: most of the fine print found on the back of the first generation model - including serial and model number, CE and FCC logos - has moved inside the battery compartment. It's located on the back of the remote and can be opened with a coin. In contrast, the new remote's battery compartment is quite visible. It's however "hidden" so well that some users thought that they couldn't exchange the battery themselves - or at all. The white Apple® Remote's battery compartment has an ejection mechanism at its lower end that can be triggered with the tip of a pen. Made from one block of aluminum, it's much thinner in both width and depth and also feels a lot more durable. The new aluminum Apple® Remote is bigger than its predecessor, which makes holding it much more comfortable - especially if you have big hands. Inside the packaging: the remote, documentation and warranty information. Remote's packaging consists of two plastic shells and is just big enough to enwrap the remote and its documentation. I'll cover most of them in the following review - from unboxing all the way down to the IR codes.Ĭompared to the original, plastic remote, Apple® has massively reduced the size of the packaging. I've spent the past six weeks with the new remote and it's packed with beautiful technical and design details. The most visible change is that its enclosure is now made of aluminum. Very frustrated.A little less than two months ago, Apple® unveiled the second generation Apple® Remote. I hate being this negative about the new remote and I was SUPER excited about it - I just can't believe how many niggles about it I don't care for. Are there other big things I'm missing that the new remote is solving for everyone? What are things people love about the new remote?Īll of ours have been in silicone cases since day one and thus we never have any issues losing it or picking it up in the wrong orientation (I see those mentioned a lot). Ultimately, it's "different" than the old one, but not really a clear win or better in all areas (at all). Our main usage is YouTubeTV and the 10sec skip thing is awful to use right now - who knows if it's Apple or Google who needs to fix or if/when Edges are too sharp - just not very comfy in hand - I think I'd end up getting a case eventually Back (Menu before) should have retained ring around it so your fingers could find it easier by touch Due to the new combo design, the touch area is much smaller - just less enjoyable to use in that way now Power button is just a shortcut for previous Sleep function - doesn't allow helping with IR only devices Siri button is awfully easy to accidentally invoke now Buttons are clickier and feel somewhat "cheaper" (and make more noise) I'm surprised people like the new remote so much. We have 6 ATV4k's and I was all gung-ho on replacing all 6 remotes (really wanted mute function) and after just one day I think they are all going back (only opened one up to test). ![]()
